Every Idle Word

“But I say unto you that every idle word that men shall speak they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by your words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” Matthew 12:36, 37

When I talk I’m not mindful of the words I speak. I have always believed that words can cut like knives into a persons heart or they can lift a spirit when spoken in kindness and understanding. Proverbs 25:11 For a time I have endeavored to watch what I say. However, I am not always successful no matter how hard I try.

The words in thought must first come from the heart.
Matthew 12:34 Jesus illustrates this by using the analogy of a tree. The decision to make a tree good or corrupt lies within the heart. “But the tongue no man can tame; it is unruly evil full of deadly poison…out of the mouth proceedeth blessings and cursings…” James 3: 8-11

Idle words are words that do not work; words which go nowhere; words which come from an unsettled spirit. Words that deny faith in unbelief adding to the cesspool of verbiage contained in this world.

Every word Jesus spoke was a working word. His Words came from a pure heart with a motive to alleviate the human condition; words full of instruction, hope and belief. Even His words of judgment to the Pharisees were meant to move them to repentance. His words worked to advance the kingdom of His Father; to turn sinners from their destructive ways.

In the day I stand before God my words will either justify or condemn me. My words will reveal my heart and the motive which led to action or inaction to advance God’s kingdom; to exhibit to the world I am a citizen of a heavenly kingdom; words that will reveal my faith. A sobering thought to say the least.

My daily prayer is found in Psalm 19:14. “Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in they sight, O LORD, my strength and redeemer.”

I am thankful God can see my heart and know the intent of my words. In His providence and infinite wisdom He is teaching me to be a child of His kingdom while I am on this earth; I understand I am only able to change they way I speak because of the power of the Holy Spirit Galatians 5:22-25.

I hear the word’s God spoke to the apostle Paul. “My grace is sufficient for thee, My power is made perfect (complete) in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

My trust is in God to continue His work in me until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6 He will help me to speak the words of His kingdom in grace and truth. With God, all things are possible. Mark 10:27 Amen!
